Re: Crona (redux)

Post by DV82LECM »

So, for a little bit about what this project is for.

I was raised in a household where Disney movies played often. Being raised on that, it was inevitable that I would have seen the movie Tangled. This language started out being a language for the kingdom in that movie. Stupid, I know, but I really wanted to make the name Rapunzel mean "my flower." However, after some creative upset, I dropped the project.

Flash forward a year and change. I found a YouTuber named Magog. He is a necromancer from a land called Morskar. He aspires to "pass through the portal and conquer our realm." He has big dreams for his project, wanting to make it into a sitcom sort of deal. One day, I had this wacky idea to take my back burner project and try to forge it into a language spoken in his Medieval-inspired land. (That is what it was meant for, anyway.) And, to my surprise, he bit, tentatively wanting to work with me. So, I've decided to really hone this one down and make sure it is linguistically perfect, giving it a proto-form and back story.

Old Morskarian:

/m n ŋ/ <m n ñ>
/p t k/ <p t k>
/ɸ s x/ <f s h>
/β ɣ/ <b g>
/l ɾ/ <l r>

/i u/ <i u>
/e o/ <e o>
/a/ <a>

Not sure if there was vowel length or not. Sound changes later.

OM roots:

All roots must end in a consonant; the longest roots may only consist of 5 phonemes. (About 20% of roots have 5.) Otherwise, there are only a FEW rules used to determine viability. Like consonants can not begin and end the same syllable. (But roots may break THIS rule if they are open to suffixation.) Beyond that, there are limitations on the same point of articulation being in the same root.

One syllable roots:
VC-
VCC-
CVC-
CVCC-

Two syllable roots:
VCVC-
CVCVC-
VCVCC-
VCCVC-

Roots have been organized into most-to-least common. The top 4 are the MOST common types.

CVC root limitations:
{p,ɸ,β}Vm, {m,p,ɸ}Vβ
{t,s,l,ɾ}Vn, {n,t,s}Vl,ɾ
{k,x,ɣ}Vŋ, {ŋ,k,x}Vɣ

Permitted OM clusters:
/mn mŋ mp mɸ mβ/
/nm nŋ nt ns nl nɾ/
/ŋm ŋn ŋk ŋx ŋɣ/
/pn pŋ pt pk ps px pl pɾ/
/tm tŋ tp tk tɸ tx/
/km kn kp kt kɸ ks kl kɾ/
/ɸn ɸŋ ɸt ɸk/
/sm sŋ sp sk/
/xm xn xp xt/
/βn βŋ βt βk βs βx βl βɾ/
/ɣm ɣn ɣp ɣt ɣɸ ɣs ɣl ɣɾ/
/lm lŋ lp lk lɸ lx/
/ɾm ɾŋ ɾp ɾk ɾɸ ɾx/

Examples of permitted roots:
*ak- "labor"
*ent- "movement"
*ɸext- "consume/eat"
*ŋaɾɸ- "rodent": <narho> /'naɾfo/ "mouse"
*kalx- "speak"
*kiŋm- "deceit/evil"
*olakl- "hunt"
*maɣoɣ- "find something lost"
*ikleɣ- "ride": <icleya> /ik'θeja/ "horse"

You listed VCCVC- twice.

The single-syllable skeletons in that list are:
VC-
CVC-
VCC-
CVCC-

The fourth one, CVCC-, can’t combine with another syllable to be five or fewer phonemes.
And you don’t want two syllables of the second or third type (CVC- or VCC-) to combine.
But, aside from VC.VC-,
you could combine VC- with either the second or third type in either order;
VC.CVC-
VC.VCC-
CVC.VC-
VCC.VC-

VC.CVC- and VCC.VC- both look like VCCVC-; the difference is just where the syllable boundary goes.
Maybe that’s why you included it twice?

You also included CVCVC-;
but you omitted VCVCC-.
Did you mean to?
Do you have a reason for leaving out VCVCC-? Or is it “I just decided to”, which in my opinion is a perfectly valid reason?

Point of fact, I'm still working this all out. I fixed the root that I added twice, as it was meant to be the root that I missed. To say something with some definitiveness, these WON'T be arbitrarily slapped together. It's really just how I want the roots to look, but I'm open to suggestions for something streamlined.

Re: Crona (UPDATE)

Post by DV82LECM »

My final update to the phonology of this project I love so much. It possesses the best aesthetics of all of my dead projects and they live on through it. This has Quenya for a base, but is an amalgam of differently inspired ingredients -- those being: Latin, Greek, Japanese, and Muskogean and Siouan stock. First, the protoform.

/m n ŋ/ <m n ñ>
/p t k/ <p t k>
/ɸ s x/ <f s h>
/β ɣ/ <b g>
/l ɾ/ <l r>
/i u/ <i u>
/e o/ <e o>
/a/ <a>
/ia ie io iu/
/ua ue ui uo/

-similar onset and coda is forbidden.

CVC root limitations:
{p,ɸ,β}Vm, {m,p,ɸ}Vβ
{t,s,l,ɾ}Vn, {n,s,t}Vl,ɾ
{k,x,ɣ}Vŋ, {ŋ,k,x}Vɣ

Permitted clusters:
/mn mŋ mt mk ms mx mɣ ml mr/
/nm nŋ np nk nɸ nx nβ nɣ/
/ŋm ŋn ŋp ŋt ŋɸ ŋβ ŋs ŋl ŋr/

/lm lŋ lp lk lɸ lx lβ lɣ/
/rm rŋ rp rk rɸ rx rβ rɣ/

Word coda:
/n t s β l ɾ ɣ/

Now, the daughter:
m /m(~ɱ)/ <ɔ> n /n(~n̪)/ <ი> -n̄ /ŋ~n/ <c>
p /p(~b)/ <ɒ> t /t~t͡ʃ/ <o> c /k(~g)/ <ɑ>

ú /u:/ <ə> í /i:/ <e>
ó /o:/ <a> é /e:/ <ɐ>
eu /eu/ <n> oi /oi/ <u>

/ɾm ɾn ɾp ɾk ɾh~ɾf ɾs~ɾʃ ɾw~ɾv ɾj~ɾʒ/

Diphthongs:
/ai oi au eu/
/ia io iu ua ue ui/

Word coda:
/n~Ṽ t~ʔ s l~ɫ ɾ~ɹ/
/e o a/
/i: u: e: o:/
/eu oi au ai/
/ia io iu ua ue ui/

Allophony:
/t/ > [tʃ], before /i e/.
/ɬ/ > [θ], before /i e/.
/l/ > [ð], before /i e/.
/s/ > [ʃ], before /i e/.
/j/ > [ʒ], before /i e/.
/h/ > [f], before /u o/.
/w/ > [v], before /u o/.

Phonetic rules:
-similar onset and coda is forbidden, except involving morphemes.
-raising diphthongs and long vowels ONLY in open syllables.
-falling diphthongs may exist in closed syllables.
-/au eu u: o:/ ONLY precede <n t c s l r>.
-/ai oi i: e:/ ONLY precede <m n p t s h l r>.
-/ia io iu ua ue ui/ precede any consonant in open syllables; in closed syllables, stress moves to the first sound in the cluster.
-/i: u: e: o: iu ui/ only exist at coda of single syllable words; /iu ui/ can exist at coda of multi-syllable words as dissimilar allomorphs.
