Today has been a very productive day for me. I evolved noun cases in Olwöa, I simplified Olwöa's verb system, and I went through a bunch of my old conlanging related google sheets. I have 3 seperate word lists and no clue what languages they belong to. I also realized that almost all languages I've made have geminates, oops.

Doing the U-words in Kankonian involved working on six different days. I set a new record for looking for missing words for a letter: 790 new words by doing the U's!

The vast majority of these U-words were words with the prefix un-. I went through an entire alphabetized LCV and mouthed each entry with un- at the beginning to myself to see if that made sense as a word. Most of the un- translations are uninteresting (there's an un- word I already had!) trivial derivations with me- (non-) such as vriri (stimulating) -> mevriri (unstimulating); oel- (without) such as dmosto (to screen for a disease) -> oeldmosto (unscreened) (with these oel- words, the verb infinitive functions as a gerund, so it's like saying "without screening"); os- (not) with -i (adjective suffix) at the end such as ekluoi (to set fire to) -> osekluoyi (untorched); or seshem- (to undo) such as mepipi (to stitch) -> seshemmepipi (to unstitch). There were also a few words made of os shtu (not yet) and the suffix -i, such as tekt (to assemble) -> osshtutekti (unassembled).

After rebuilding my sound changer from scratch by implementing a tokenisation system, I'm pretty much back to where I originally was - with an already additional feature of understanding anything labelled with a "one or more" symbol (for which I'm currently using '+' because a subscript 'n' is not feasible).

E.g. it can take the input /dV+k/ and correctly recognize any of the following: /dak/, /daek/, /daeuk/, /daeuak/, etc...

It also accepts features, so something like /C[Stop]+an/ will correctly match with /kan/, /ktan/ or /ktpan/, but not /kran/ or /man/.

And of course all the above still works if the pattern is nested in a bigger structure, i.e. it can easily locate both instances of /dV+k/ in /sidaeukjapdiekmat/, or even in something as complex as /si{d,m}{a,ia,uei}{g~k}jap/.

Still plenty to do, some testing and debugging included, but this is a nice bit of progress.

Up until today, Kankonian had only one sentence tag: isnaloshas, which translates as "I assume". Recently I realized it wouldn't work for some types of "isn't it?" questions, and so today I added a new tag to the Kankonian language. I wrote up these new rules in my Kankonian grammar:


Questions asking for reassurance at the end of a statement (Manda's in the hall, isn't she?) are called sentence tags. All tags (isn't it?, aren't they?, don't we?, do you?) are translated as isnaloshas ("I assume") when the speaker is asking for certification of some factual question that she or he is not completely sure about. When written in Roman characters, sentences ending with a sentence tag take a period, not a question mark:

When you are asking for reaffirmation on something you already know your interlocutor agrees with -- a value judgment or a matter of taste rather than something factual you want to know -- you instead use wirhauess ("we know"):

Onishartz (oni for short) means "test", while hel means "with". The pogi (plural should be pogas) tests children's knowledge of plurals for nouns with "soft" endings (like single vowels), while the tzadem (plural should be tzademes) tests children's knowledge of plurals for nouns with "hard" endings (most consonants). And yes, I was not-so-subconsciously inspired by Spanish when I gave Kankonian the rule that nouns ending in consonants add -es to pluralize.

After my previous post I remembered that I hadn't implemented the "any amount" sign for case blocks (my term for structures like "{p,k,g}") yet, so I went and rewrote a chunk of my code to consider them. So, with the "any amount" symbol "+" (as an easier-to-write alternative to a subscript "n"), my sound changer can now also correctly identify sequences such as "{g{e,a}}+" - i.e., it will return a positive for words like "ga","gepan","gegapan","sigagepan","gagegamin", "gagagegegage", etc...
