Lehola Galaxy Megathread
266-word blurb on the Lehola Galaxy:
Lehola, a galaxy 325,000 light-years from the Milky Way, has an Interplanetary Council of its many inhabited planets that discusses when to make official contact with Earth. Although its Law of Secrecy now requires advanced Leholan sapients forgo official contact with planets until the people there are "ready", some Leholans, the crackcreepers, will reach contactees in a low-profile way, so when the contact with the planet's government becomes official, it will be less of a shock. Lehola has FTL travel, but its biggest difference from current Terran scientific understanding is the Iteli, a form of guided evolution that allows the same syndromes of species ("bioswaths") to evolve independently on multiple planets. The planets range from Kankonia, a quasi-anarchistic human planet, to Tziel, a planet ruled by fundamentalist Greys that genetically engineered a colony of humans who can do no evil on a colony on Shaleya, to Hapoi, occupied by the Reds, with a Heraclitean view on what the meaning of "is" is, to Pluos, inhabited by the telepathic homa who often live in ufopoleis (flying-saucer-borne cities), to Doyatl, inhabited by time-traveling glomas, to Natwri, whose sapients the pynas have one culture obsessed with powers of two, to Mensinghi, whose underwater monarchy is under one queen, to Rathar, home of Lizard People who often invade and menace other planets, to Bodus, home of super-evolved Domeheads, to Saros, whose lef have a culture-war division between rebellious evangelicals and orderly, civic seculars, to Keitel, home of the hyper-intelligent chais, to Danton, a dictatorship under the heshra, to Chedam, whose militaristic nation of Kebsabhaz summarizes everything that's wrong with America.

Re: Lehola Galaxy Megathread
Lately I've been thinking of this post of mine over in Aevas' "If you were to write one novel . . ." thread:
I've decided to create an all-new bioswath for this planet. I haven't made any bioswaths with indigo plants yet, so, yes, this planet's plants are going to be indigo instead of green or black, and it will have the sun type, distance from the sun, etc. to support indigo plant life. Most of the chordologue (vertebrate-analogue) species on this planet are going to have spikes, spines, scales, etc., but the domesticated, docile sapients and their domesticated animals will not. They will need to live within the ecumenopolis to protect themselves and their livestock and pets from the wilderness which they cannot face. Perhaps the tiny number of ruling oligarchs will maintain these defense mechanisms on their bodies, and only breed with each other to keep commoners from genetically inheriting them, but the commoners -- the masses who get arrested regularly -- will have been genetically engineered to be without them. There will be no nails or claws for scratching, but the farm animals whose ancestors had hooves will be allowed padded feet like a camel's, so they can do their farmwork, walking around, without getting uncomfortable and bolting. Guns will be denied to the masses, but knives and other blades will be legal due to their practical necessity in cooking and slaughtering livestock, as well as some religious rituals that I have yet to think up, so, much like the knife stabbings that have replaced shootings in England, there are still a lot of stabbings that warrant mass arrests and examination, not to mention theft, vandalism, and rape.
I'm think of calling the arrest force field a byeshchfield, with byeshch- being the verb root in the national language for "arrest". The decided word ferpa, with its syllabic R (except the ferpa won't be a cat! . . . just a cat-like domesticated animal from the mammalogue class of this bioswath), reminded me of Czech, so I decided to give this language an Eastern European aesthetic. I'm not implying that it's supposed to be like Putin's Russia (nor, as you can probably tell, like Zelenskyy's Ukraine).
The bioswath of this yet-unnamed planet is going to have some entomologues, some arachnologues, some worms, and some marine invertebrates (including crustaceologues), but there will also be a chordologue phylum. Usually my chordologue phyla have an ichthyologue class, an amphibiologue class, a reptologue class, an ornithologue class, and a mammalogue class. With this bioswath, though, I'm doing something different. There will be two classes of ichthyologues -- they all have a backbone and fairly fish-like bodies, but one class will have scales like salmon, carp, or sharks (most fish on Earth), whereas the other will have no scales and instead be slimy like lampreys and eels. From the scaly ichthyologues will be descended two land-dwelling classes. One will be scaly and cold-blooded and will essentially be reptiles (except more spiked). The other will be warm-blooded and have breasts, and they will also have scales, but their scales have evolved from their reptologue ancestors into scales made of hair. Think pangolin. A few more classes will descend from the slimy lamprey/eel class. One will be a lot like amphibians, except with a lot of spikes. Another will have soft, one-piece skin with feathers (and lots of fancy head ornaments); this will be the ornithologue class on this planet. Then there will be the creatures with soft skin and usually spikes or shells, plus fur or hair like non-pangolin mammals have, which are warm-blooded with breasts. This last class will be the one to which the sapients and most of their spikeless domesticated animals will belong.
I've thought what else I could do with this bioswath once I've created this creatures. I'm thinking of making another planet, not too far away, that also has the indigo plant bioswath and a slightly different array of plant and animal species. The sapient species on this planet, though, will belong to the reptologue class. I'll call these sapients the biwis, since that's what the species' name in the planet's lingua franca sounds like to human ears (biwi languages have a birdsong-ish sound to them). The biwis will often abduct commoners from the mammalogue species on the other planet I mentioned, and biwis drink bodily fluids of other sapients and non-sapient animals. The biwis will have an agreement and a partnership with the ruling class, and will work with them, clandestinely, to oppress the commoners in exchange for favors from the ruling class and a pact to leave the ruling class alone (i.e. not drink their bodily fluids nor abduct them). There will be rumors of biwi involvement in the ecumenopolis' government by the commoners, but most commoners will dismiss these as paranoid conspiracy theories. Maybe the ruling class of the mammalogue species will also have milabs wherein they dress up in realistic-looking biwi costumes?
Oh, and forget what I planned to write in my novel. Nobody's going to blow this planet up.
Thoughts?
I've been coming back to this idea from 2003. I really do want to build a planet, with a one-world government, like this. I was thinking about the justification for arresting everyone and the question of how the people got to be so docile. I've been thinking I could tie it into religion, since when religion's involved, people can come to believe just about anything (just look at cults!) Maybe the state religion that everyone's forced to follow has teachings about imperfection, fallibility, and failure . . . like the Christian idea that "we have all sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God". Regularly marring the records == and reputations -- of all the postpubescents on the planet with an arrest can be used to break down people's pride and remind them that they're not perfect. Tie this in to religious bits of dogma about the fall and failure of this sapient species (which I have yet to think of a name for). Do any of you have ideas as to how the dogma for this state religion could work, and what its chain of reasoning would be?I had a vision of one specific chapter in my story way back in 2003. This chapter would have the protagonist landing on a planet and finding that all the adults on the planet are currently under arrest. There is a force field that arrests all the non-government folks over the age of puberty whenever anyone commits a crime, to give the police time to investigate and find out who did it. He discovers that the planet has become authoritarian in the extreme, and the people have become very docile so as to accept their arrests. The protagonist then would take one little girl and her pregnant raccoon-tailed cat -- I imagined this breed of cat as being called a ferpa cat (rhymes with "Sherpa") -- onto his spacecraft with him. As he and she take off, he sets something off that will blow up the planet he and the little girl are leaving behind.
I've decided to create an all-new bioswath for this planet. I haven't made any bioswaths with indigo plants yet, so, yes, this planet's plants are going to be indigo instead of green or black, and it will have the sun type, distance from the sun, etc. to support indigo plant life. To be honest, I wasn't even thinking about the myth that Jews drink Christians' blood. Nor did I notice the connection between reptoids and Jews in David Icke's conspiracy theory mythos. I was actually thinking about the things Greys are said to do to humans. As I mention here with the Greys of Bt!a, I also have Greys drinking people's bodily fluids on another planet in the Lehola Galaxy. On this planet, the biwis will be much to the commoners of this mammalogue species (I've decided to call them vlcheks) as the Greys and reptoids are to Earth's humans.Cellular Automaton wrote: ↑06 May 2022 19:01This is concerningly blood-libel-y, especially since they're lizard-people - that is, "reptologues".Khemehekis wrote: ↑06 May 2022 05:59 [...] The biwis will often abduct commoners from the mammalogue species on the other planet I mentioned, and biwis drink bodily fluids of other sapients and non-sapient animals. Besides, I don't know if you know this, but I'm Jewish myself (my IRL surname is Landau), as I mentioned in that thread that just got locked when it devolved into anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. So I could probably get away with having a species that drinks another species' blood.

I did not! That does reassure me about your intent. On a different note, I think the bioswath/Iteli concept is interesting. A lot of sci-fi has something similar going on unspokenly, and it's interesting to see adressed in-world. Not to mention, I like Earth-like animals for the same reason I like Earth-like conlangs; gives the reader a frame of reference. It's easier to differentiate between succulent-like trees and conifer-like trees than between two kinds of sentient metal which might be equally different, just like it's easier to differentiate between variations on Spanish than variations on a completely a-priori aesthetic. I think the Iteli helps to create that frame of reference.

Yes, there is a continuum from planets that have humans and many of the exact same species as Earth . . . to planets that share many species and higher taxa with Earth but have a different sapient life-form . . . to planets that have green plants but a different arthrologue phylum and chordologue phylum . . . to planets with non-green plants and no species in common with Earth . . . to planets like Lisseti, which has black plants and mostly animals that don't even resemble vertebrates, arthropods, nor molluscs. Also, the percentage of higher taxa that are mappable onto human bioswath equivalents varies from bioswath to bioswath (Shaleya, for instance, has plant and animal taxa that don't map well in a one-on-one fashion to Earth's taxa).On a different note, I think the bioswath/Iteli concept is interesting.

Re: Lehola Galaxy Megathread
Just redid the two posts with the Master Species List. I have 3,933 items now. It was nice to add in all the creatures (and higher taxa) from the vlchek and biwi bioswath(s), and add some new sapient words. Also created the pacwao (monkey-like creatures with four squid-like legs and two arms from the same class as the Ritoni) a month or two ago, and added some words from their planet, Caopi.

Re: Lehola Galaxy Megathread
For those of you who are wondering what I’ve been doing lately, I brought a new bioswath (the blue plant bioswath) into the Lehola Galaxy recently. I've done blue-green plants and indigo plants before, but never blue plants. From Thursday April 13 to Wednesday April 19, I drew up more than 300 new creatures (including 5 sapient species) and envisioned the Ovichagen and Phorksh languages to name them.
Ovichagen has 21 consonants:
m /m/ p /p/ b /b/
f /f/ v /v/
n /n/ t /t/ d /d/
s /s/; [ɕ] before /i/; z /z/; [ʑ] before /i/
r /ɻ/
l /l/ y /j/
k /k/ g /g/
qu /kw/ gu /gw/
h /h/
w /w/
ch /tɕ/ j /dʑ/
and 5 vowels:
i /i/ e /e/ a /a/ u /u/ o /o/
(Allophony will probably include end-of-word positions and R-controlled vowels.)
Diphthongs are:
ai /ai/ au /au/ ei /ei/ oi /oi/
All syllables in Ovichagen either are open (i.e. ending with a vowel) or end with L, M, N, or R.
But the best thing about Ovichagen’s phonology isn’t the phonemic inventory, but the fact that it has . . . rendaku!
When a root beginning with a paired unvoiced consonant appears at the end of, or in the middle of, a word, the beginning consonant becomes voiced!
p -> b
f -> v
t -> d
s -> z
k -> g
qu -> gu
ch -> j
You can see this in the name of the language. Ovicha (the name of a country on the planet Vel) + ken (language) -> Ovichagen.
Several hours after creating this name, I realized it contains the name of the CBBizen Chagen in its spelling! Decided not to change that. I also named one of the creatures in the blue plant bioswath a lambuzo. Go fig.

Also came up with the idea of Phorksh, spoken on a planet called Orna. Phorksh has a plosive-heavy sound. It used to have a voicing distinction in its unvoiced plosives. Then the voicing distinction was lost, so now it has two letters in its alphabet that spell /p/, two letters that spell /t/, and two letters that spell /k/. I transliterate these as P, PH, T, TH, K, and KH, to indicate how they are spelt in their native alphabet. My idea was a script that had redundant letters, like the Hebrew abjad. In addition to these, Phorksh has the voiced plosives /b/, /d/, and /g/, and special letters for /ps/, /ts/, and /ks/.
I haven’t created either the Phorksh alphabet or the Ovichagen syllabary (yet), but I have a good idea what their letters/characters are going to be.
I started out the blue plant bioswath by drawing viruses and bacteria. Zebar is a virus that causes shortness of breath, heart malfunction, and often death. Sikumba is a virus that breaks down the immune system. Equen is a virus that causes chills, a stiff and painful back, and inflammation of the brain. Mumboryelmedon is a club-shaped bacterium that causes nitaim, a disease that involves fever, vomiting, passing of urine and diarrhea from the mouth, closing of the eyes, and reddened skin. Chamnon is a two-headed bacterium that causes fuzom, a disease that involves a cold, a runny nose, and coughing. And nainon is a “four-headed” bacterium that causes polpol, a disease marked by fever and enlarged parotid glands.
Drew a few blue algae, then over 100 blue plants. Vedols are the graminologue (grain-analogue) plant order on these planets. Solmu and reiza have Mickey-Mouse-head-like grains, while pofo looks like dreadlocks. Fruits include berries, drupes, multiple fruits, and pomes, plus the encephalocarps (fruits with moderately thick peels on the outside and soft insides that look like brains of various shapes, with the seeds where our basal ganglia would be). Examples of encephalocarps are the weimi, the arten, the toquiqui, and the nangul. The bolto is a drupe with red fuzz on the outside, while the yellow laigua is shaped something like a grenade, with a cherimoya-like bumpy texture on the outside. The turkalba is a tree with stickers on its elliptical blue leaves, giving a multiple fruit covered with green ellipses, each with a hair hanging out, on the outside. Vegetables include a thermometer-looking stalk vegetable called the tilgui and a brown, turkalba-like tuber called a jorgo. Tandas are the fabologue (bean-analogue) order of plants, including the nindanda, the sensidanda, the hondodanda, and the bildanda. The sogo, a fiber tree, seems to be wrapped in white cotton candy. Drug plants include the sunflower-like ete, with eteine in its yellow seed pod; the white lily-like hizi, with hizine in its seeds; the jauga, with an eight-fingered blue leaf containing jaugine; and the palm-looking maposipo, whose black seeds (two to a fruit) contain the drug maposipine. Olvemba is a big rhizome with “scabs” that provide a spice. Yulwinra has brown, shelled fruits that resemble eggs to produce another spice. The timbojuva (“penis-tube” in Ovichagen) is a phallic succulent. Kolvas are the conologues (conifer-analogues), while taras are the palmologues, polkas the pteridologues (fern-analogues), and sizals the bryologues (moss-analogues). Nijuvalals (“water-tube-tree” in Ovichagen) are a group of tree-succulents that combine wood with succulent leaves; these include the yurpaida, the risinga, and the echeverria-leaved hokolal.
On to the animals! Worms include the armorworm, a phylum of worms with armor-like scales over their skin; the peelworm, which looks something like a peeling banana; the peachworm, a pus-basin-shaped worm with peach skin; and the spikeworm, which is spiked somewhat like a hallucigenia. The last two worms came to me in a dream wherein I was at a beach.
Himpozuldas, the malacologue phylum on these planets, include the opahul, which looks like a spider-octopus, and the moljari, which looks like a scorpion-octopus.
Chuvazums (“tube-animal” in Ovichagen) are a strange phylum of submarine-like animals with stalks coming out of their mouths. The kim’o has five eyes, while the siljizun has one eye stalk on its upper surface and a second eye stalk on its lower surface. The omoiqua has two eyes in front, and a jagged paor of lobes on its sides. The pucheljuva has four eyes and attaches onto other sea creatures like a remora onto a shark.
The dalzanhimpos are a class much like crustaceans. The walku plays the role of krill/plankton on these planets. Ths siveiki resembles a shromp with a unicorn horn. The mechiji has poison in its stinger-tail, much like a scorpion. And the land-dwelling tuyo spins a kind of silk called fisa. Its juvenile form, the pipiduyo, spins meigavisa (“virgin fisa” in Ovichagen). Kindozums are the insectoid/entomologue class on these planets.
Orna has gordalzans due to its low gravity: dalzanhimpo descendants that grew onto armored vertrebrate-like roles. The khristhof, for example, resembles a crab-rhinoceros, the pumpel a crab-hippopotamus, the gardgak a large tusked creature, the cantrel a crab-xenarthran, the chuculb a crab-deer, the thelpsar a crab-sivatherium, and the teibik has two “wings” atop its carapace, which serve as a sort of saddle seat to riders.
There are two chordologue phyla in this bioswath (not counting the gordalzans as chordologue, since technically gordalzans are just really big animals with exoskeletons). From the starfish-like takizum class evolved the astrochordate phylum – most creatures in this phylum have four linbs and a head in a shape that makes their asteroid-like evolutionary lineage evident. These dominate on planets like Orna. From the rhipidistian-like pigabi class have evolved the lepidochordate phylum, which have scales and an internal spine. The higher-gravity planets like Vel are more favorable to lepidochordates.
Yens are an ichthyologue class of astrochordates that have a strong showing across all the planets with a blue plant bioswath. Philstocards are an amphibiologue class of astrochordates, while gersands are more reptologue. Gersands include the ophiologue (snake-analogue) chorms (like the nifta, phelchorm, and gepsa) as well as the two-limbed, siren-like maikkhats order (like the bilshpits, turnde, and boitsar). The fils are one class of astrochordates that is prevalent across all the planets with the blue plant bioswath, because on Vel, they had already cemented a place when lepidochordates made it to the land and the lepidochordates never really challenged fils for the air. Forms resembling seagulls, gannets, pelicans, penguins, puffins, flamingoes, ibises, eagles, hawks, owls, chickens, ducks, geese, swans, chickens, moas, kiwis, parrots, and more grace the skies and seas, with their astrologue takizum lineage evident from their appearance. Mauftsils (“fur-star” in Phorksh) are a furry (but non-mammaried) class of astrochordates that include the sauropod-like phord, the slim, thylacine-like tilbkeps that walks on its hind legs, the cat-like kunda and dog-like teca, the bear-like shkorps (which can also walk on its hind legs), the pinniped/sirenian-like urfphan, and the almond-shaped, marine ksondish.
Lepidochordates start with the pigabis, which resemble early fish of Earth such as the coelacanth, lungfish, sturgeon, gar, bichir, etc.: the zaijubeta, gebubum, and jiyandi are living representatives.
Elpaguangos fill the role of both amphibians and reptiles in the lepidochordate bioswath. Their name means “double-life” in Ovichagen, much like the English word “amphibian”. They have scales like reptiles, but lay eggs in the water, wherefrom they hatch, much like amphibians. Some of then have hooves, like the yalki and horse-like kabu, and some even hooves and horns, like the kose and the bearded ofazum. The niwasi resembles a plesiosaur with horns, and the okota also lives in the water, The quagi order is the ophiologue group of elpaguangos, including the venomous jobi, the polpolguagi (a venomous snake so named because it looks as if it is afflicted with polpol), the swift, deadly bakuza, and the non-venomous maralin and nachaguagi. Piyarzums are a subclass of elpaguangos that gestate their eggs in a pouch (or piyar) with water. After the eggs enter the pouch, a caul called a zosai forms over the pouch ane keeps the water inside. The eggs are protected from oöphagous predators that way. The eggs hatch and young develop inside the pouch till they are ready to leave the pouch, and which point the zosai breaks and the young piyarzums come out. Examples of piyarzums include the elguava, the jarbasi, and the choiden.
Sankamims (“scale-hair” in Ovichagen) are lepidochordates that have one long, thick, hair growing from each scale. They are not truly a mammalogue class, as they have no breasts and do not produce a galactologue fluid. The sazaki has a bushy, squirrel-like tail covered in bristly hairs. The simbei looks something like a sea turtle or armadillo. The jingin is another marsupiologue (not an elpaguango, so not a piyarzum). The iltague and novaja are long-necked and resemble a cross between sauropods and carnivorans. The loso, with stripes on its tail and spots on its torso, lives in trees much like a raccoon, coatimundi, or lemur. The ayatoitoi is a black, nocturnal, tree-dweller. The bem looks like a dachshund and is often kept as a pet. The cat-like chilpa is a popular pet too. The pamaso, dulsa, pailziwa, kuchajaime, and miltajaime resemble cetaceans. The makache and yesito are ape-like.
Sapients! The tsend, essentially a star-yeti, is a mauftsil of Orna and is the species that speaks Phorksh. The hairy, human-like yachi is a sankamim that lives on Vel and is the species that speaks Ovichagen. The wiyup is a cetacean-like sankamim from the planet Ekii. The zija is an elpaguango from the planet Martreis. It has plates on its head (like the Pokémon Machamp), eyes on stalks, and stripes on its back and looks . . . pnkish. The chak is a parrot-like fil from the planet Uatar.
I still haven’t decided on other things about the tsend and yachi, like what foods they eat, or how their governments are structured, or what religions they practice. I have decided that neither of these hairy peoples wear many clothes.
Adding the words related to these peoples, their creatures, their drugs and diseases, their planets, and their solar systems got me over 400 new Kankonian words. (Yay!) Going over the P-words should push me past the 82,000-word mark.

How many people have planets in Lehola? Would it be possible for me to set one of my planets somewhere within it? because I want an excuse to have a somewhat earthlike world

Just my siblings and I. We started when I was 14, Liz was 11, and Alex was 5.
Oh yeah, and Alex's friend Eric developed Hea and Cheowa with him when they were little.
I've never had anyone ask for a planet in Lehola before! I'll "let you in", though. I'm going to email you a list of all the named arms, stars/solar systems, and planets. You can name a planet and its solar system, and tell me which of the six arms you want it to be in.

Re: Lehola Galaxy Megathread
Wow, thank you! I didn't realize how few people were involved. Nevertheless, I'm glad to be a member of this apparently quite exclusive club! I have an idea for the story behind my planet, which I can email to you to make sure it makes sense within the technological context of Lehola.Khemehekis wrote: ↑26 Jul 2023 03:28Just my siblings and I. I've sent it! And I'd like to reiterate this is like the fifth time how honestly shocked I am. Because it's kind of my nature, I feel like I need to apologize if you're at all reluctant to allow me to join ... I don't want to seem like some overexcited, annoying little kid.Khemehekis wrote: ↑26 Jul 2023 03:45You're welcome!Üdj wrote: ↑26 Jul 2023 03:44 Wow, thank you!
