NSM semantic primes

Post by Znex »

I've just been looking into semantic primes for my conlangs recently, in trying to figure out semantic distinctions and combinations different to English and more interesting, so I thought I might make a thread for it. Semantic primes in NSM theory (Natural Semantic Metalanguage) are the irreducible cores of language meaning, the essential building blocks.

The concept of primes doesn't preclude that certain primes in any given language may be expressed by multiple words or by a single word broad in scope; rather primes are core meanings that can't further be simplified or explicated in a non-circular manner. {{KNOW}} for instance may be given further distinctions, eg. in German wissen, kennen, können, or it may be expressed by a single word that also can be used to mean eg. {{THINK}} or {{FEEL}}.

The words expressing the primes may themselves also be formally or morphologically complex, eg. SOMEONE < some+one, and they may also have additional meanings, eg. the word for BODY in English may refer to a human body, or an animal body, or group of bodies, or an abstract or metaphorical body, etc.

The semantic primes listed below are taken from here, for further reference.

I really like this list! Way better than the famous 218 sentences list, which uses words like "robin", "walking stick", or "bonfire" just in their first 100 sentences. Maybe it'll make sense to split this list into a separate topic so whoever is interested (I sure as Shellian am!) can post theirs too.
But, for now, I will limit myself to the word list from the original post, for :con: Yélian.

Note: If there are multiple words that could be used equally for the semantic prime in English, I stated both, separated by a slash (/). The primes themselves are separated by commas (,)
