Project: Life-form picture dictionary -- multilingual
Here's a long-term project that's been brewing in my mind for some time, but I'm finally posting on it. I'm taking the Lehola Species Word Master List at viewtopic.php?p=310844#p310844 and adapting it to a wordlist for Terran creatures (and mythical Terran creatures).
My idea is to have an ebook that is essentially a picture dictionary. We'd have pictures of various plants and animals (plus a few simple life-forms) from our world, and we'd make them into a multilingual series of picture dictionaries for plant and animal words. We'd start by making the English one, then someone who knows Spanish can translate it into a Spanish picture dictionary (with articles for gender), someone who knows German can translate it into a German picture dictionary (with gender and plural indications), someone who knows Japanese can translate it into a Japanese picture dictionary (with hiragana to go with the kanji), etc. And of course, once you've gotten settled with your conlang, you could make this book into a picture dictionary for your own conlang and put it up on the Net!
This list is derived from the categories, mythical creatures, and 200 human bioswath species words in the Lehola list. To reflect the fact that we're only covering Terran creatures (and a few Terran mythical creatures), a few changes were made. The categories "Universal Words" and "Human Bioswath Categories" were combined under CATEGORY WORDS, since the distinction of whether a taxon is or is not Terran disappears when we're doing this for words we have in English. Also, a HUMANS section for words for people was added at the end. And then we have the collective nouns like "cattle"; these will be marked in bold at the beginning of a subsection on this list to indicate that we will not have a separate picture for "cattle" in our book, just a bunch of pictures (for "cow", "bull", "calf", etc.) with the heading "cattle" written above them.
Finally, to reflect the fact that this picture dictionary template is going to be used for a book that will be translated into real natlangs and other people's conlangs, which might split things up differently than English, I consulted the Landau Core Vocabulary and indicated distinctions (which will have separate words in some but not all languages), such as "cherry (sweet)" and "cherry (sour)". There will be two different pictures of cherries in our book to accommodate languages that make a lexical distinction between the two. As you'll see looking over the list, there are a number of English words like this that sometimes have different semantics.
This book is still in the planning stage. I have yet to decide to best method of illustration. One way would be for me to draw all these pictures by hand, on paper, and then scan them. Another would do to find public domain images online.
Another idea -- and this would be an exciting experience -- would be asking an AI program to draw these creatures and people. Various CBBizens who have AI programs to work with could say, "Draw a white pelican" or "Draw an apple", and the AI would do its job, creating images that could be saved and collated with each other.
Let's get the discussion started about how to do this.

Üdj tells me he likes the AI idea for the drawings, and he suggested NightCafé (https://nightcafe.studio). And so, I've officially joined/subscribed. Fancy to see some of you over there as well!
I tried it out by asking NightCafé (set at Stable) to draw a field of barley (the first word on my plants list). Here is the drawing it made: https://creator.nightcafe.studio/studio ... ZQ7mwoJ%29

If I counted right, I'm going to need 293 pictures for this book. One down, 292 to go!

Re: Project: Life-form picture dictionary -- multilingual
I've having trouble with getting NightCafé to draw worms. First I told it, "Draw an earthworm", then I tried, "Draw some worms". But both times, all it drew was a bunch of earth and caves.
Those who have used NightCafé: how do you get it to draw a worm?

Generally, it works best if you don't use imperatives in the prompt... try "worm close-up photo" or something.

Okay, I've given it a few tries, and it seems that NightCafe doesn't even know what a worm is.

Hmmm . . . I mentioned this in Chat, and a guy named Cody was able to get an earthworm.
I typed in "segmented worm", though, and it gave me this:

Meanwhile, I'm having trouble with Grey aliens and fairies.

Great progress! I'm really excited to see the finished product.
Is it going to be like an encyclopedia, with descriptions of the plant/animal? Or is it just the words?
And I want to know more about Lehola ─ where should I go?

Just the words in whatever language. I'm thinking about printing the AI drawings together on pages of an ebook, perhaps using Corel WordPerfect. Is it going to be like an encyclopedia, with descriptions of the plant/animal? Or is it just the words?

Have a problem getting it to draw figs -- perjaps it interprets "figs" as an abbreviation for "figures"?
But I've gotten thirteen fruit words done today. Made real progress on fruits.

I got the pineapples! https://creator.nightcafe.studio/creati ... 95mbTVbTbZ (I'm a huge fan of pineapples IRL, too.)
Also, I made a new tag for this project (#cbbpicturedictionary). This would help all the people working on it find each other's creations.

Excellent work! I'll start using the #cbbpicturedictionary tag, too.
NightCafé draws great pomegranates!
And now you (and NightCafé) have got me wanting pineapples, too!

@Üdj: I'll have five more credits to work with tonight. Do you want to do the rest of the fruits and have me start taking on the vegetables, or would you rather do the first of the vegetables (asparagus, avocado, bean . . .)?

I'll finish up the fruits.
But as for credits, if you do one image at a time, it's actually free! If you scroll down in the settings menu, you can select the number it produces... 4 images (the default) is 1 credit, but 1 image is 0 credits! So you can work on it even if you're broke.
