CBB Conlang Relay XVIII - We begin

Post by Mándinrùh »

Lo, the festival of Februa already passed and no relay yet scheduled for the year, I hereby call to order the XVIII conlang relay of the CBB. I, your humble host, have prepared in my language Atili a most excellent text to be distorted beyond recognition by the vicissitudes of Mercury, patron of translators.

DE POSTVLATIONVM (of the Rules)

Each supplicant of Mercury will receive the following components from the host at midnight UTC on Monday:
  • A text in a conlang
  • A short grammatical guide to the same conlang
  • A lexicon containing all roots found in the text
  • Any other reference as may be necessary to interpret the text
The supplicant shall then make a good attempt to translate the text into English and into their own conlang, sending to the host at the end of their week the same components mentioned above. To the host also send in a SEPARATE message the English text and any other notes the supplicant wishes to include. The time allotted for this task shall be one week only, and this limit shall not be extended. These materials shall be submitted to the host by 23:00 (11:00 PM) UTC on Sunday or the supplicant will be skipped.

The text produced by the final supplicant shall be translated back into English by your humble host.

Returning supplicants please note the following rule changes for this relay:
  • Torches will be sent only to the host
  • The host will send each torch to the next participant at midnight UTC Monday
  • Materials are due by 23:00 (11:00 PM) UTC on Sunday
  • The Sunday deadline will be absolute to within a few minutes so that people who need to plan around family events, travel, etc. can do so with confidence
  • To make up for the hard deadline, the allotted turnaround time is increased from 72 hours to a week. This also ensures that everybody gets a weekend.
DE SVPPLICANTIVM (of the Supplicants)
  • [tick] Week 0 (before March 3): Mándinrùh translates from :eng: English to Image Atili
  • :!: Week 1 (March 3 - March 9): foxcatdogwolf translates from Image Atili to :con: Amarin
  • [->] Week 2 (March 10 - March 16): Trailsend translates from Image Atili to :con: Hiding Waters
  • Week 3 (March 17 - March 23): angels-ribs translates from :con: Hiding Waters to :con: Mazits
  • Week 4 (March 24 - March 30): HolyHandGrenade translates from :con: Mazits into :con: Hilo
  • Week 5 (March 31 - April 6): hiatus due to host unavailability
  • Week 6 (April 7 - April 13): Acipencer translates from :con: Hilo to ???
  • Week 7 (April 14 - April 20): Man in Space translates from ??? to :con: Common Caber
  • Week 8 (April 21 - April 27): Flavia translates from :con: Common Caber into :con: Sēoni
  • Week 9 (April 28 - May 4): TBPO translates from :con: Sēoni into :con: Arkasian

  • Week 13 (May 26 - April 1): Fanael translates from :con: Teket Lau into an unnamed conlang
  • Week 14 (April 2 - April 8): Mándinrùh translates from Fanael's unnamed conlang into :eng: English
QVAEDAM INNUTA (Some Hints)

For anyone new to these relays, check out the previous ones, listed below, for an idea of how it works. Here is an example of a torch. Don't feel obliged to make a document, it's fine just typing it up in a DM.

Some other tips:
  • Don't be afraid to use unexplained idioms
  • Feel free to adapt any technological or biological terms to match your conworld if necessary
  • Don't worry about matching grammatical structures from the original text. If you need to use a passive where there isn't one in the text or your language doesn't have the applicatives that are present in the source, remember that the goal is to translate the meaning, not the words.
  • It's fine to match the conventions of your conpeople. For example, it is fine to adjust dialogue to match characteristic speech patterns of your people.
  • If your torch was missing a component, contact the host
  • If you think there is a word missing from the lexicon, please reach out directly to the previous supplicant

I’ve always wanted to do a relay, but my languages are never developed enough and the length of the translation texts is always daunting.

I've put you in at the end. Dates will depend on the number of participants.

I've put you in for Week 1, March 3-9. If that doesn't work for you, I can reörder once we get more people signed up.

I'd encourage you to give it a try. Conlang relay is a great way to develop a language. While I can't guarantee the length of the text you receive, the original English text is under a hundred words.

Okay, I’ll participate. Still seems daunting but I suppose the worst I can do is hold up the relay for a few days. I’ll use my new conlang Hilo.

I can put you towards the end, which will give you more time to prepare, but the text might be long and weird, or I can put you near the beginning where the text will likely be shorter and more sensible. Which do you prefer?

I didn’t know it was a city, I just chose the name based on vibes. It might change if I decide to add a language suffix or something.

Oh, OK, so I'm guessing it's not a Polynesian conlang? Is it an a priori conlang?

A bunch of people asked to be towards the beginning, so I've moved you later in the relay. I hope that's not a problem.
